The Chartered Institute of Housing is the independent voice for housing and the home of professional standards

Key housing topics in 2016

2016 is a year of significant change in social housing. The roll out of universal credit will reach all parts of the country and a number of other major reforms announced in the wake of the last general election will come into effect, such as the extension of the right to buy to housing association tenants and the lowering of the overall benefit cap. Landlords will also need to begin ‘gearing up’ for further changes which are on the horizon, like the introduction of ‘pay to stay’ for council tenants and the extension of fixed term tenancies. For landlords, there will be big challenges in preparing for and then implementing all of these changes and over the course of the year CIH will be producing a range of materials to help you to do this.

This section of the website covers some of the biggest policy changes which will take effect either in 2016 or early 2017 and brings together all of the information you need to start preparing for them.
