ABOUT THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF HOUSING (CIH)

The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) is the professional body for people who work in housing. The CIH is a registered charity and a non-profit making organisation. We have over 22,000 members who work predominantly in local authorities, housing associations, arms length management organisations (ALMOs) and the private sector in the UK and Overseas.

CIH INVESTS £10 MILLION IN HOUSING SECTOR

The Chartered Institute of Housing's annual report shows that it invested a record £10 million in the housing sector in 2008 - an increase of seven per cent compared to 2007. Overall, CIH's total incoming resources grew by nearly four per cent to just short of £12 million.

Last year also saw membership grow by an impressive seven percent to 21,858 over the period. CIH membership has now doubled over the past 15 years.

Over many years the CIH Presidential Appeal has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities and good causes across the world. This year's President, Steve Benson, is supporting the work of Crisis - Changing Lives.

The CIH aims to be an inclusive professional body which is 'Open to all and closed to prejudice'. In 2008 we introduced our new equality and diversity strategy. Facts highlighting our progress in this area include:

  • Minority groups make up 14% of our Members
  • 27% of CIH students have BME backgrounds
  • 58% of CIH members are women

In 2008, CIH became a member of lesbian, gay men and bisexual charity, Stonewall.
