Jobs in Housing: Different paths people can take in housing

The social housing sector employs more than 150,000 people - mainly to manage and maintain its homes. There are also  ‘housing’ jobs which can be found in housing trusts, cooperatives, voluntary organisations, the private sector, universities, commercial bodies, the Ministry of Defence and public services such as social care health.

If you choose to work in housing, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your contribution really matters, because everyone needs somewhere decent and affordable to live.The work is not easy and often challenging, but the rewards in terms of fulfilment are high.

Butler Bursary »

David Butler Bursary Scheme

The scheme is named after the CIH's former president and chief executive, David Butler, who retired in 2007. It is a learning grant scheme which provides financial support for people wanting to pursue and progress a career in housing. The scheme is supported financially each year by CIH and Ocean Media Group Butler Bursary fund.

To be eligible to apply for a funded place you must be:

  • A current CIH member
  • New to a management role (maximum 18 months in a management role)
