About the Event

Last year’s Older People’s Housing Support Conference was a great success drawing over 150 delegates from more than 91 different organisations, 98% of which rated the event as very good or good. How could we match this success? Easily we think! This year’s conference builds on last year’s successes and, with some changes and brand new venue, promises to be even better, brighter and bolder. Designed by experts in the sector, this year’s conference programme has moved on from discussions on the likely impact of some of the key changes on older people’s housing and related support. It will focus on practical implementation within an ever challenging economic and political climate. Yet again with the help of some of the most respected speakers in the sector we offer you a range of topical keynote and workshop sessions aimed at both frontline staff and service managers. Not only will these sessions reflect some of the key changes to the operating environment arising for example from personalisation but they also showcase the outcomes from the recent research undertaken by the ministerial working group in sheltered housing. We have of course one or two celebrities to tempt you along, but not just any old celebrities! Not only is the wonderful and witty Chris Lowe back to chair the event with his longstanding journalist experience of social housing but we are joined by one or two other famous faces; famous and not just for their day job but for their contribution to the older people’s housing and support debate.

Howard Farrand, CIH Immediate Past President
I’ve seen some fantastic supported housing projects offering safe and nurturing environments for older and vulnerable people but I fear we are still, as a society, sleep-walking into a disaster in relation to housing for our older citizens. There is no hiding from the statistics about our aging population, no avoiding the supply and funding crisis we are already facing - yet there is no agreement about how to proceed in relation to care and support. At CIH our role is to help you pick your way through these issues. Our conference will offer you an excellent opportunity to learn, to improve your knowledge of the latest good practice and to network with others struggling to make sense of the challenges we face - whether it’s about personalisation, housing and health strategies or any other aspect of this crucial agenda.

Guest Speaker: Dame Joan Bakewell
Joan Bakewell’s broadcasting career continues into its fourth decade with her series for BBC Radio 3: Belief. She also appears on Radio 4’s Saturday Live, BBC 1’s Daily Politics, and GMTV’s Sunday programme. Her latest play was broadcast on Radio 4 in 2007. Her first novel will be published early in 2009.

Joan’s three areas of interest are: the arts, religion, and old age. She was BBC television’s arts correspondent throughout the 80’s, and was later on the board of the National Theatre, The Aldeburgh Festival, and Friends of the Tate. She is currently Chair of the theatre company Shared Experience and also of The National Campaign for the Arts. In the 90's Joan presented Heart of the Matter on BBC 1 – a programme that dealt with moral and religious dilemmas of our times. A selection of her interviews for her radio series Belief was published in 2005.

In 2003 she began a column for The Guardian called Just Seventy. In 2007 she published “The View from Here: Life at 70”. She currently has a weekly column in The Independent each Friday. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours.

In November 2008 Joan was appointed The Voice of Older People by the Government acting as an independent and informed advocate on issues affecting older people’s lives. Joan is also an accomplished chair of conferences and seminars and is a highly skilled conference facilitator and after dinner speaker. She has a wealth of experience hosting events and award ceremonies, both at home and abroad.
