Equality Act or not, the equality agenda continues

13 May 2010 - London - booking code:15020
25 May 2010 - Manchester - booking code:15021

About the Event

As part of the General Election manifesto of 2005 the Government pledged a new Equality Bill to harmonise, streamline and simplify existing legislation. The Bill was published in April 2009.

By spring 2010 we will know if the Equality Bill has received Royal Assent. This will bring together seven different strands of diversity into one piece of legislation with the aim of making the law more accessible and easier to understand. The strands will be expanded and will become ‘protected characteristics’.

In the event of the Bill not receiving Royal Assent or being dropped (partially or fully) by a change of Government, these events are just as valuable due to the proposals in the Bill resulting from case law and European Union intervention; there are significant changes required in the equality agenda.

All housing organisations will need to be aware of and be proactive about the diversity of their customers. This will ensure they are providing the right services to the right people and developing good relations between their customers and employees who have different backgrounds and experiences.

There will be a major impact on all housing providers if the Bill receives Royal Assent in 2010. It will replace all existing legislation; add new legislation and a new public sector Duty.

This event will advise housing providers what is expected of them and also offer clear examples on how other housing associations have already started to implement the Bill’s proposals into their organisation.

These one day events will give housing providers the chance to assess where they are currently with Equality and Diversity within their organisation and identify what they can do to ensure they are working within the law and good practice.

The plenary sessions will include the opportunity for questions and answers and general delegate interaction. The sessions will be covering an overview and update of the Equality Bill, legal framework around the Bill and an opportunity to learn from a housing provider about their experiences and feedback on the Equality Bill within their organisation.
