23 July 2009, Leeds - (Booking Code: 15928)

About the Event

Domestic violence accounts for 15% of all violent incidents. With around two people every week dying because of violence at home (Home Office, 2006). Domestic violence can affect anyone at any time. It occurs in families in all regions, of all social classes and across all ethnic groups and communities. But it is still largely a hidden crime - which simply isn’t acceptable.

Many people, both men and women, suffer in silence as they feel unable to get access to safety and justice or to escape the abuse, fear and isolation they face. Around one incident of domestic violence is reported to police every minute – with most incidents never reported we only know about the tip of the iceberg (Home Office, 2006; End Violence Against Women, 2008). The problem of domestic violence for black and minority ethnic and refugee women is particularly acute. Research conducted by Rai and Thiara (1997; Gill (2004) and Mouj (2008)) identifies several obstacles to accessing the emotional, informational and instrumental support that women seek from specialist services.

The Home Office has launched a new guide aimed at helping victims of domestic violence, outlining how friends and family members can recognise if someone is suffering from domestic violence and what practical support is available. The guide is part of a package of measures including over £4million funding for projects and helplines, increased training and support for Jobcentre Plus staff to help better identify and support victims, a partnership with the British Bankers’ Association to provide additional banking support for victims, and a new dedicated Home Office website.

The aim of this event will be to challenge the issues facing HAs and LAs who are tackling domestic violence everyday. You will hear from high profile speakers who are leaders in this field. You will also receive an update from the Government on latest policy.
