In the current economic climate, where funding is harder to come by and development has frozen affordable homes targets are becoming harder. So how do we get mixed-tenure development moving again?
Affordable homes are an important element of housing supply. Providing a supply of affordable housing has an impact on local labour markets as well as the health and education of our communities.
The government is committed to providing the opportunity of home ownership to as many people as possible through schemes such as HomeBuy and shared equity agreements, making it a more affordable process but people are becoming wary to purchase in the current climate. Whilst the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire will continue to be available to tenants of local authorities and some housing associations, new approaches to home ownership offer even greater opportunities.
Most affordable housing is built under section 106 agreements. Planning rules make it very difficult to deliver affordable housing in a weak market. This event will examine current grant schemes and the HCA affordable housing plan to deliver these homes in the current climate. Delegates will look at various models that support the provision of affordable homes and investigate viable financial options which will give those on a low income a real opportunity to access sustainable home ownership. The event will also examine what the future holds in relation to the long term planning of affordable housing schemes and how when the economy recovers we could do things differently.
This event is aimed at staff working in local authorities and housing associations in the areas of Finance, HomeBuy and Leasehold Management including Leasehold Managers, managers of mixed tenure estates or people with an interest in this area of housing management.
