About the Event

The CIH constantly strives to deliver its strapline ‘Open to all, Closed to prejudice’. Building on the launch of its Equality and Diversity strategy for 2008 – 2010 we are proud to have become Stonewall Champions and to be leading the sector with our Positive Action for Disability scheme. With this in mind the CIH are delighted to bring you these two special one day event on the impact of the Single Equality Bill.

What is the Single Equality Bill?

As part of the General Election manifesto of 2005 the Labour Government pledged a new Single Equality Bill to replace, streamline and simplify existing legislation.

The proposed Bill is currently progressing through the parliamentary process and is expected to receive Royal Assent in the Spring of 2009

What impact will the new Bill have on housing providers?

There will be a major impact on all housing providers as it will replace existing legislation, add new legislation and a new public sector Duty (Housing Associations will be expected to comply as they are regulated by a public body).

Proposals include:

These one day events will give housing professionals the opportunity to take stock of where they are currently with Equality and Diversity within their workplace. The event will identify what to do to ensure you are working within the law and within good practice in areas of race, gender, disability, religion and belief, sexual orientation and age.

Each ‘strand’ of diversity will have a dedicated speaker to give an overview and evaluation of how the Single Equality Bill will affect their area. The plenary sessions will include the opportunity for questions and answers and general delegate interaction. In addition there will be plenary sessions covering topics such as Single Equality Strategies and Action Plans, Equality Impact assessments, latest case law and potential additions to the recognised ‘strands’.
