'A safe, warm affordable home for all'

CIH president Robin Lawler considers the challenges facing housing in 2013 - and how CIH can help you tackle them.

Robin LawlerWell, let me begin by wishing everyone a happy new year! Having said that, 2013 looks like it will be a very challenging year for individuals, communities and organisations alike. Housing waiting lists are growing, the cost of living continues to outstrip wage increase and welfare reform is looming.

All those are reasons to continue to make the most of CIH membership in 2013. And if you’re not a member, to join CIH - it’s never too late! We aim to provide excellent value for money for members and they are offered a range of practical support, learning and personal development tools to mitigate the impact of an increasingly adverse working environment.

For instance, CIH’s ‘How To…’ guides offer invaluable practical support. Similarly, our Guide to Welfare Reform is a ‘must read’ to understand the changes heading our way and to help manage the implications for ourselves, our tenants and other customers.

The National and Regional Boards will be offering networking and learning events over the next year. Make the most of them and if you’re not a member, go along to see what CIH could offer you.

Before my term of office as President comes to an end on 1st May, I’m looking forward to attending the Northern Ireland Housing Awards at Belfast City Hall in February and the South East, Welsh and Scottish Conferences in March. I will also get to address a second Presidential Dinner at the National History Museum on 6th February when I will outline the challenges and opportunities facing the housing industry and explain what CIH can do to help you respond.

So it’s shaping up to be a busy year ahead for everyone working in housing. In 2013 CIH will build on our emerging partnerships with health, care and planning, and we will reinforce our ties with the National Housing Federation and Shelter in arguing for the resources required to provide everyone with a warm, affordable and safe home.
