'CIH membership will help me achieve my goals'
Earlier this month, Vicki Maguire - corporate strategy officer at Riverside - attended a CIH event. Two days later, she signed up to become a member! We caught up with her to find out what she's most excited to get involved in.
Hi Vicki! You attended the North West housing camp event earlier this month – was this the first time you’d come along to a CIH event?
I attended the final day of CIH's Housing 2016 conference, as part of the 'Delegate of the future' scheme, which made me want to find out more about what CIH has to offer. The North West 'Housing camp' was my first event, and it sounded like a great chance to meet like-minded people with a passion for social housing, in a more informal setting than your regular conference.
Even though I was nervous, I was made to feel really welcome, and even pitched a session. There was some great debate, and as our name badges didn’t display our job role or employer, it felt like everyone was on a level playing field – all opinions mattered. It was a rewarding day which, despite the great challenges our sector is currently facing, gave me great hope for the future of social housing!
You enjoyed the Housing camp so much that you signed up to CIH membership – that’s brilliant news. What stood out about CIH and made you want to join us?
One of the most well-attended sessions at the Housing camp focused on housing careers and the future of CIH. I heard how valuable membership had been to people, particularly due to the sense of community and the networking opportunities that come with it. We talked about how we could replicate this getting by together with other CIH members in our own workplaces.
After coming into social housing as a temp five years ago, I’m now committed to developing my career within the sector, particularly in the area of strategy and public affairs - I recently took up the role of corporate strategy officer at Riverside. I think CIH membership will help me achieve my goals through invaluable training, events and local networks. I felt really welcome at Housing camp, which I think says a lot about CIH as a whole. Each new member can offer something different, and I want to work together with other members to help CIH become even more relevant and valuable to the sector in future.
You’re now officially part of the home of professional standards, and we’re really happy to have you on board. What are you looking forward to experiencing as a CIH member?
I'm looking forward to being part of a community of like-minded individuals and getting involved in events across the North West. My Inside Housing subscription will be invaluable for my role, too.
In particular I’m looking forward to accessing the upcoming webinar on career development planning, and also attending 'The big conversation' (10 February, Leeds / 8 March, Brighton), which takes place in Leeds in early 2017. I’ve also spoken to members of CIH's North West board and I'm looking forward to observing one of their board meetings next year. I’ve already made some great connections at Housing camp and look forward to making more in future!
