More than 140 attend housing white paper event with minister
More than 140 housing professionals attended an event arranged by housing minister Gavin Barwell and jointly hosted by CIH to discuss the housing white paper.
The event, on Tuesday 21 February, in Birmingham, was part of a regional tour of events on the housing white paper by Gavin Barwell and was co-hosted by CIH and HouseMark.
In a brief introduction the minister reiterated his desire to work with all organisations to solve the housing crisis.
"I am man in need of allies," he said.
"The prime minister was very clear what she expects of me when she took office and I want to work with you to deliver that.
"I have spoken to many organisations and individuals since I became housing minister and the key thing I have learned is that there is no silver bullet to solve the housing crisis and that a series of interventions are required."
The minister took questions from an audience which included local authority professionals, housing association professionals, private landlords and other housing bodies for an hour and a half in a lively session chaired by Terrie Alafat CBE, the chief executive of CIH.
Terrie said: "This was a great event which gave housing professionals in the area the chance to explore the housing white paper in detail and ask the minister specific questions about its content.
"The people who came to the event really got involved in the debate and it was interesting to hear more about the unique challenges facing the region.
"It was also interesting to hear some more detailed thoughts from the minister on the specifics of the measures identified in the white paper. It is very clear he wants to listen to the sector and that can only be a good thing."
