UK government's benefit cuts reversal 'good news for NI social housebuilding'

Responding to Theresa May’s announcement at Prime Minister’s Questions today that the Local Housing Allowance cap will not apply to supported housing or the wider social housing sector, Chartered Institute of Housing director for Northern Ireland Nicola McCrudden said: “This is very welcome news. CIH Northern Ireland has highlighted the impact that cutting housing benefit would have on tenants and social housebuilders in Northern Ireland.

“We were extremely concerned the cuts would put people’s homes at risk and threaten the ability to build new social housing in some areas. It is very welcome that the UK government has listened to housing professionals and changed course, and we await details of the new funding proposals.”

Today’s announcement follows a CIH Northern Ireland report, launched at Stormont in July with the All Party Group on Housing. The report said that the planned cuts would increase the risk of rent arrears, eviction and homelessness for social housing tenants in Northern Ireland. It would also have a knock on effect for the ability to build new social homes.
