Rising Stars 2018 - the final ten: Jess Page

As they fight for your votes, each of our Rising Stars finalists has been asked to blog about housing and how they would use winning the competition to the benefit of the sector. Next to put forward their case is Jess Page.

Winning Rising Stars 2018 will afford me networking opportunities I couldn’t otherwise access. My current network has supported me to learn and challenged me to improve the housing services I deliver. It has expanded my horizons from the G15 bubble and from the distinct housing model operated at former Notting Hill Housing. I am grateful for the help and support I have received from my housing peers, particularly in reaching out to 40 housing organisations for my dissertation research into housing management models. As Rising Star, I will promote this research and offer further organisations to join and gain insights into the relationship between different frontline roles and performance outcomes.

To meet peers and leaders at other organisations is a great privilege, time is short and for others to spend it on you is an opportunity to learn and build something together, as Rising Star I will be able to access this more readily. I’m really keen to meet the other shortlisted candidates who sound like they’re doing interesting work and see what we can learn from each other.

I am passionate about partnership working and collaboration, both within the housing sector and with adjacent sectors. Whether that’s working with other housing associations to bring social enterprises into the furniture market in London or working with small local charities who deliver in-depth and valuable services in the smallest of our communities. Working in partnership is a way to match large scale policy and power of wealth with a local patchwork approach to neighbourhood management and community support. As Rising Star, new doors will be open to me and I’d use the opportunity to make new links not just between my association and others but help other like- minded organisations work together, too.

My ultimate goal is to spread and gain insight into innovation in homelessness prevention. I will build on support partnerships I have already created to stimulate an innovate response across the sector. I will promote the principles of ‘whatever it takes’ embodied at Notting Hill Genesis, to prevent a household from losing their home. Sharing resources and building relationships with the social and health sectors as well as the third sector enables this to be coordinated and more likely to be successful. I will work with experienced experts to put into practice my formal education to evaluate interventions and build on successful outcomes.

Winning is also an opportunity for professional development. Having studied under Anne Power, I have been fortunate enough to learn a great deal of history about housing and about environmental impacts of decisions we made then and today. As Rising Star I will encounter many professionals in the sector outside of my usual circle and I relish the opportunity to learn more about placemaking, communications and leadership. I want to learn more to make good choices now to safeguard the future.

Ultimately, winning Rising Star 2018 will enable me to expand my influence and improve the homelessness prevention work I am passionate about, and that will have a knock on impact on any residents I work with in the future.

Jess Page is tenancy support programme manager at Notting Hill Genesis and a 2018 Rising Stars finalist.
