South East awards: The winners

17/03/2016

During the conference, more than 200 people celebrated the achievement of those who had submitted entries for the CIH South East awards.

'Innovation of the year' winner: Golding Homes – Health MOT Roadshow

The Health MOT Roadshow is a free mobile health initiative touring local communities in the borough of Maidstone. The Roadshow delivers health MOTs using an interactive health kiosk to all visitors, as well as a NHS health check for those who are eligible.

The initiative is funded by Kent County Council, Golding Homes, Wellbeing People and Mitie, and is a pilot project to encourage people to have a free NHS health check wherever they are, rather than making an appointment at a surgery.

The judging panel felt this submission really demonstrated engagement, partnership and collaborative working, bringing together private and third sector organisations and pooling resources to tackle health inequality among tenants in their communities. The innovation is not only detecting health problems, but it is also proactively improving the health and wellbeing of individuals and the communities at large.

'Best outcome for residents' winner: Wide Horizons and L&Q – Get Out, Go Wild

During 2015 in May and August school holidays, 162 young people aged 11-15 participated in the Get Out, Go Wild five-day residential adventure learning programme. To ensure those in the greatest need can access it, the programme is completely free.

The judging panel considered that this entry is a really successful programme that has reached a high number of young people over short period of time.  It promotes social inclusion and there is evidence of strong data gathering mechanisms in place. The impact of the programme is far reaching as it impacts not only on the young people, but also on their carers and parents.

'Best outcome for residents' - highly commended: Radian for Round About Café

The judging panel wanted to give special recognition about this initiative. It was felt that project of creating a cafe is really energetic. It provides a great range of support and services from one location – ranging from servicing healthy and affordable food, to promoting health and wellbeing via things like cookery courses, diabetes awareness raising and history and fishing groups.  The panel also recognised that this submission demonstrates partnership working and inclusion of a diverse range of individuals and agencies being involved in its development and ongoing success.

'Development of the year' winner: Affinity Sutton for Friese Greene

Friese Greene House is a landmark mixed use building situated on Portland Road in Hove, which has brought a brownfield site back into use, providing 35 much needed one, two and three bedroom apartments for affordable rent, in a city with a population that is particularly "hard hit by lack of access to affordable housing." Friese Greene House has helped breathe new life into this strip of Hove, not only providing homes but also a new GP surgery, pharmacy and commercial space.

'New professional of the year' winner:  David Robb from Raven Housing

David is a great example of a housing professional who takes responsibility for developing his own skills and knowledge whilst ensuring that the level of service delivery remains high. In his relatively short period in the sector he has continually taken responsibility for his own professional development; from completing a traineeship role, to taking on additional tasks and responsibilities as well as taking part in external forums and completing a CIH Level 4 qualification. David is committed to his role and doing an excellent job and he is truly focussed on his customers, supporting and training colleagues and his role within the organisation.
