South Wales housing organisations win housing heroes award
A group of housing organisations in South Wales have collective a prestigious prize at the UK Housing Heroes Awards in London today.
The awards were established in 2009 to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the many unsung heroes working in the housing sector.
Charter Housing, Community Housing Cymru, RCT Homes, Valleys to Coast Housing, Hafod Housing Association, Wales and West Housing Association and Bron Afon Community Housing collected the Ground Breaking Service Team of the Year award for Moneyline Cymru – a partnership project established to tackle doorstep lending in the region. The partnership has resulted in the establishment of Community Development Financial Institution, which now provides affordable loans to those forced to use door-step lenders.
The Moneyline Cymru Steering Group received their award at the Hilton Hotel from BBC TV personality Ben Fogle. In total, awards were presented in 15 different categories in an event organised jointly by the Chartered Institute of Housing and Inside Housing magazine.
The Chartered Institute of Housing’s Kathy Hanson said: "This is a remarkable project which has attracted the support of 17 housing organisations in the region. By the end of 2009 they had secured significant levels of funding to finance their activities and 462 loans have already been made. For many people they have already halted a vicious cycle of increasing debts and eradicated door-step lenders from their lives."
