Strategic leadership vital to delivering planning for growth
The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has welcomed the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) for its simplicity and says the strategic role of local authorities will be key to its success. CIH was actively involved in the revisions to the document throughout the government’s consultation process and CIH chief executive Grainia Long said she is pleased to see many of the organisation’s priorities included in the framework. She said: “CIH welcomes the government’s streamlined planning policy and we are pleased it recognises the key role housing can play in boosting the UK economy.
“It is vital that developers, housing associations and others are able to access appropriate and available funding so that the growth the government desperately wants to see can be kick started.
“Housing providers now need to come to the forefront and play a strategic role in planning development with local authorities.
“Given the demographic changes the UK is experiencing, CIH is also pleased to see specific mentions of the needs of older and disabled people in the NPPF and the need for a range of housing options to be provided.
“We believe that the inclusion of attractive and accessible housing options for current and future residents is a key factor in developing sustainable and inclusive housing and neighbourhoods for the future.”
