Success of Northern Ireland strategy will depend on the detail of how homes will be built
17/10/2012
Minister for Social Development Nelson McCausland yesterday launched a housing strategy for Northern Ireland.
Jim Dennison, interim director of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) in Northern Ireland said: “We are genuinely excited by the principles of the strategy – and in particular meeting housing needs and supporting the most vulnerable - and that it sets out to deliver housing for everyone which is fair.CIH has long been calling for a housing strategy which is essential if we are to have a coordinated and systematic approach to stable housing policy in Northern Ireland.”
However, the answers to some of the biggest challenges remain unclear - how are the 11,000 homes we need every year in Northern Ireland going to be built and financed? What we need next is a detailed action plan which sets clear targets for how we will build more homes - the success or failure of the strategy rests on this. Our ask of government to ensure that the action plan adheres to the strategic principles, has a clear and measurable sense of direction and is properly resourced.”
CIH very much looks forward to engaging with our members and the wider housing sector in responding to the strategy. As housing professionals it is our job to deliver it.”
