Tenant board member wins housing heroes award
A tenant from Castlemilk, who sits on Glasgow Housing Association’s Board - Kate Willis - has won a prestigious prize at the UK Housing Heroes Awards in London today.
The awards were established in 2009 to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the many unsung heroes working in the housing sector.
Kate won the Inspirational Board Member of the Year Award following years of unrelenting community service to improve the quality of life for the people of Castlemilk. Kate was elected to the Glasgow Housing Association’s Board as a tenant member in September 2009, following nearly a decade of voluntary work to improve her local community. In 2008 she was elected Chair of Castlemilk Tenants Housing Association. She also works part-time for a community project called the Castlemilk Time Bank, which helps to bring local people together by swapping tasks.
Kate collected her award at the Hilton Hotel from BBC TV personality Ben Fogle. In total, awards were presented in 15 different categories in an event organised jointly by the Chartered Institute of Housing and Inside Housing magazine.
The Chartered Institute of Housing’s Kathy Hanson said: "Kate has been an active member for a decade or more. She’s been involved in much of the £18 million of investment to improvement tenants’ homes and lives in her local community. Her vast experience and commitment is now being used on Glasgow Housing Association Board and her Housing Heroes award today is much deserved."
