The Octavia club launch
The Octavia club is a new initiative from the CIH London board, aimed at newer members and members studying for a CIH qualification.
We launched on 25 February with a special centenary event held at London South Bank University, chaired by Helen McGregor from the London board and sponsored by Mears Group. Our vice chair Martyn Kingsford kicked off the event by speaking about the life and times of Octavia Hill and her belief in the vital importance of good housing and good landlords - which still inspires the work CIH does today.
CIH chief executive Terrie Alafat CBE was the keynote speaker. She talked about the challenges we face as housing professionals in 2016 – including government objectives to deliver one million new homes by the end of the parliament, the shift away from building new social housing stock and the importance of working together to overcome these.
Terrie ended by saying that in this year, the centenary of CIH, we will be promoting the impact of the housing profession and standards, uniting members and celebrating our successes. She highlighted that over the last 100 years we’ve seen vast improvements in housing conditions and changes in lifestyles and expectations and stressed that we need a housing system that is fit for everyone.
Following Terrie's rousing speech, the floor was opened up for a Q&A session and some lively debate ensued. Ideas and discussions continued to flow afterwards in the networking session with wine, beer and soft drinks provided by Mears Group as attendees got to meet each other and chat over a drink.
This was the first of a series of Octavia club events, so look out for more from the Octavia club over the next few months.
