Removal of the supporting people ring-fence puts services at risk

CIH Cymru called on Welsh Government to re-think the merging of the supporting people fund with other funding streams.

Director Matt Dicks said:

“We welcomed the protection of the supporting people budget for the next two years in the recent headline budget agreement reached by Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru. Today however, in the detail of the Welsh Government’s budget it has been revealed that the funding will be merged with other funding streams in 2018/19. We cannot emphasise enough, that protection for the fund must translate both in terms of the finances committed to it and the way it is delivered in practice. Removing the ring-fence from the Supporting People budget is something that we have seen, from the example in England, decimates its purpose, core value and identity.

Today’s announcement is extremely disappointing. With both current and future changes to welfare placing people at greater risk of needing some form of support, it is pivotal that the Welsh Government now provide additional clarity on what the arrangements outlined today will mean in practice.”
