Wolverhampton Homes win housing heroes award
A West Midlands housing organisation - Wolverhampton Homes - has won a prestigious prize at the UK Housing Heroes Awards in London today.
The awards were established in 2009 to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the many unsung heroes working in the housing sector.
Wolverhampton Homes received the Procurement Team of the Year Award for their initiative to involve tenants in how their environment was maintained. The team set themselves an objective of involving tenants in the appointment a new grounds maintenance contractor. Following surveys and a number of events, including workshops, a new tenant designed specification was produced. Tenants were also involved in interviewing potential contractors with issues such as standards, local employment and site improvement high on their agendas.
The Procurement Team collected their award at the Hilton Hotel from BBC TV personality Ben Fogle. In total, awards were presented in 15 different categories in an event organised jointly by the Chartered Institute of Housing and Inside Housing magazine.
The Chartered Institute of Housing's Kathy Hanson said: "With no increase in costs, the new maintenance agreement has resulted in nearly 400 sites being brought up to standard and tenant satisfaction reaching 86 per cent - a significant increase in just six months. The project clearly demonstrates the value of involving tenants - to improve services and generate better value for money."
