Housing providers are part of an emerging political and professional consensus about focusing on neighbourhoods and increasing the involvement and influence of the people who live and work there. This new good practice guide equips readers with an understanding of the fast-moving neighbourhood agenda and makes a strong case for housing organisations to play an active role in supporting the neighbourhoods where they are key stakeholders.

Packed with inspiring examples from a wide range of areas, the guide celebrates the transformation already achieved in some neighbourhoods, while challenging many more housing organisations to make this success widespread.  With particular emphasis on neighbourhood management as a way of achieving lasting change, the guide provides practical guidance on the closely-related issues of improving local services and empowering local communities.

The guide includes information on how to:

  • Identify and implement ways to shift from managing housing stock to managing places
  • Develop and sustain effective partnerships
  • Build capacity in communities and organisations
  • Evaluate impacts and outcomes

The guide is aimed at housing professionals and other people who are directly involved in managing and renewing neighbourhoods. It should also be of interest to a broad range of policy-makers, community stakeholders and people active in their own communities.

The authors are co-directors of Social Regeneration Consultants and specialise in community-based urban regeneration. They have considerable hands-on experience of neighbourhood-based programmes and previously wrote CIH's 2001 Good Practice Guide on Neighbourhood Management.

This guide is a joint publication with the Housing Corporation and was funded by the Housing Corporation and Communities and Local Government.
