CIH Level 3 Certificate in Housing Practice (QCF)

This qualification will provide you with a broader knowledge and understanding of key areas in delivering housing services. It is comparable to an A-level or an NVQ level 3, SVQ3 or level 6 on SCQF.

Aims and outcomes

On completion of this qualification you will:

  • Broaden your knowledge of how your role fits into the wider housing environment
  • Gain insights into improving customer service and team working and planning for training and development needs
  • Develop your personal, organisational and communication techniques
  • Develop problem solving skills that will enable you to evaluate your area of housing-related practice
  • Further examine your selected area of specialism to gain a greater insight into policy and practice issues directly affecting your role


You can apply to study this course if you are:

  • Already working in the housing industry and want to develop your skills and knowledge
  • Looking to specialise in an area of housing
  • Aged 16+

Course outline

All students will study the following three topics, which have a credit value of 12 under the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF):

  • Delivery of affordable housing services
  • Equality and diversity for housing
  • Professional practice skills for housing
In addition, students must gain a further 15 credits from the following optional units. Your choice of units may vary depending on which centre you choose to study with.

  • Managing housing services
  • Resident and service user involvement
  • Managing neighbourhoods
  • Caretaking and concierge services
  • Regeneration, renewal and sustainability
  • Support for independent living
  • Telecare services
  • Housing advice and information
  • Traveller site management
  • The housing context
  • Supporting homeless people
