The Chartered Institute of Housing is the independent voice for housing and the home of professional standards

Undergraduate qualifications for CIH chartered membership

One route to CIH chartered membership (CIHCM) is by completing an accreditaed academic qualification. We offer and validate courses at undergraduate level across the UK, including:

  • CIH Level 4 Certificate for the Housing Profession
  • CIH Level 4 Certificate in Housing (both of these qualiications meet the requirements for stage one of the academic route to CIH chartered membership)
  • CIH Level 5 Diploma in Housing
  • Foundation degrees and degrees offering a BA or BSc in Housing Studies which are partially or fully recognised by CIH for CIHCM through our validation processes

CIH partially validate wider programmes which may have housing modules within the course.  It is indicated where further study is needed to achieve CIHCM.

The majority of these courses include APEX, the CIH practice requirement for chartered membership. This is available to all part-time and sandwich course students (except stage one courses). Some full-time students will be required to complete APEX separately through CIH.

Eligibility

Generally, you can apply to study if you have:

For level 4:

  • completed the CIH Level 3 Certificate in Housing Practice or
  • A-levels or
  • significant experience in housing

For level 5:

  • completed a CIH Level 4 Certificate or Diploma , or equivalent qualification or
  • significant experience in housing

Please note that individual centres will set their own entry requirements, so please check with the centre you are looking to study with.

Qualification outline

Centres design courses against a framework of expectations set by CIH. These expectations anticipate the key knowledge, skills and competencies expected from a chartered member.

The courses will:

  • reflect the cutting edge of theoretical and practical debate within the industry
  • engage with local and regional housing issues
  • meet the skills and learning needs of local students and employers
