CIH RESEARCH

CIH undertakes a wide range of research to support its educational and policy development. Uniquely we are able to call upon the knowledge and experience of nearly 20,000 members to inform our work. We also undertake research and work on behalf of other organisations including Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Department for Communities and Local Government and Housing Corporation.

PUBLICATION - LOOKING INTO HOUSING

Research impinges on every aspect of delivering a quality housing service. Evaluation of operational performance, undertaking service audits, assessing specific housing needs, giving a voice to tenants and other service users, through to deciding on the implications for service delivery of a major research study: each illustrates the range of research needs which constantly engage and challenge housing professionals. Because housing policy-makers, managers, housing officers and students all have research needs, it is crucial that they properly understand how research is conceived and carried out. Find out more.

HOUSING BENEFIT RESEARCH

The government is reforming the way that Housing Benefit is paid in the private rented sector. Currently, this benefit is usually paid directly to private landlords rather than claimants. But from 2008, Housing Benefit will be paid to private rented claimants unless they are vulnerable or in rent arrears. This report explores the issue from a claimant perspective, drawing on interviews with private and social housing tenants. It suggests that people are happiest with their current payment method, but that the proposed changes may not be as problematic as some commentators have suggested

VISIONARY LEADERSHIP IN HOUSING

CIH in partnership with IDeA and Chartered Institute of Environmental Health have produced a briefing paper Cinderella Strikes Back: strategic housing and the private rented sector.
The briefing looks at the contribution of the private rented sector to a local authority’s strategic housing and place shaping role.
