Data protection in practice

This half-day course provides a practical introduction to Data Protection legislation across a social housing context. The course covers both the current UK Data Protection Act and also the new EU General Data Protection Regulation which will replace it in May 2018. Using real life examples, the course outlines data privacy and protection obligations of your organisation and provides practical steps that will help you mitigate risks and ensure compliance within the workplace. The course will also include a short introduction to Scottish Freedom of Information Legislation and its implications for Scottish Housing Associations.

Learning Outcomes/objectives

At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Define the need for the Data Protection Act and outline the key concepts and definitions
  • Describe data protection principles within the context of your organisation
  • Identify the risks & penalties of non-compliance
  • Integrate data protection into your everyday work.
  • Explain the key elements of the Scottish Freedom of Information Act

Who should attend

Anyone with responsibility for ensuring compliance with Data Protection and wishes to have a basic understanding of the Freedom of Information Act.

Heather Jack

Heather Jack is an independent Information and Records Management consultant, popular with her clients because of her business-focussed, pragmatic and engaging approach. She helps clients take a strategic, quality approach to the life-cycle management & governance of their information assets to minimise risk, reduce cost and maximise value. Her methodology is informed by industry standards and best practice, driven by business and stakeholder requirements and focussed on achievable deliverables through effective staff communication, inclusion and support. Her independent status means that clients can trust that her advice is based entirely on finding the best solution and approach to meet their business needs. She was UK Records Manager of the Year in 2008, is a member of the British Standards Institute (BSI) ISO 15489 International Records Management Standard review panel and is keynote speaker at the IRMS (Information & Records Management Society) 2015 Annual Conference. She has worked with a number of Scottish Housing Associations over the last 10 years, (most recently on behalf of the CIHS), mainly in the area of Data Protection compliance training and support, focussing on information security and records management.
