Spotlight - Meet our members: Iain Gillespie

Discover more about the members of CIH Futures Northern Ireland. Today, we're sitting down with Iain Gillespie, business support manager at the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE).

How did you start your career in housing?

Like many others, I stumbled upon the sector without really knowing too much about what would be involved! I am so pleased I did end up working in housing, the ability to really make a difference to people’s lives, the wide ranging job types and the enthusiastic and talented people I work alongside make it a very enjoyable and rewarding career choice.

I initially joined as a temporary admin officer in housing benefit. I thought the position would maybe only last six months, and I told myself it would be good experience and a chance to learn new skills and develop as a person. Fast-forward a few years, with so much help and support from the NIHE and CIH to develop my skills and knowledge, through gaining CIH qualifications, leadership courses, the help of mentors and supportive peers (among many others things) – I find myself as the business support manager within homelessness and business excellence. If you had of asked me when I started my first job if I thought I would still be in housing, or if I would be offered so much support and opportunities along the way I would not have believed you.

However, it's not just me. If you ask anyone in housing about the supportive people they work alongside, the opportunities afforded them to study and be mentored or the role CIH plays in equipping, setting standards, building confidence and providing the platform to network and share knowledge with other housing professionals – they would all say the same thing.

What do you love about your job?

I love the fact there is so much variety in this sector and no two days are the same! However, the main thing I love is the ability to make a difference.

I have recently been working in planning for Homelessness Awareness Week, and working together with the local teams has been a timely reminder of the great work that goes on from housing professionals up and down this country on a daily basis. It has reinforced that the people I get to work with are passionate, knowledgeable and committed to helping others. How could you not love that about your job?!

What has been your most memorable experience working in housing and why was it so special?

About three years ago, I worked in a job managing the most complex housing cases in my area. People suffering from terminal illnesses, disabilities, the frail and elderly and supporting those with care needs for dementia and other conditions.

At the time, it felt challenging and demanding. Looking back, it was one of the most rewarding jobs I have had. The ability to directly impact the lives of so many vulnerable individuals and families, and find them suitable accommodation to improve their quality of life was such a special and memorable time.
