SEC: Next Generation Leaders programme

The SEC or South East Consortium is made up of 64 members (and growing!) who are building procurement frameworks. From the very beginning they've stayed committed to delivering services that make procurement easy, provide options, and create value - every time. This dedication to compliance and customer care has seen them become a leader in the sector.

Over 20 years they've grown their offer to deliver more than just procurement frameworks. Advising on specifications, cost models and supporting contract management post-award. And, as a not-for-profit organisation they deliver real social value through their training programme and community foundation.

Why did SEC start the programme?

The CIH played a pivotal role in kickstarting the SEC Next Generation Leaders programme. The course was born directly from a challenge first highlighted by CIH president Aileen Evans in her 2020 presidential address. In her speech Aileen highlighted the pressures facing colleagues across the sector and the urgent need to support the development and wellbeing of the workforce.

Following the address conversations turned to retention and the need for wider investment into the sector’s emerging leaders…and so the spark was lit! SEC knew that they were perfectly positioned to support their members with meaningful development opportunities that would support the future workforce.

What does the course look to achieve?

SEC have trained 108 future leaders through the programme. A number of delegates are now CEOs or executive level in leading housing associations. Since the programme began five years ago the purpose has always remained clear: to help SEC members nurture talent earlier and more intentionally. The four-module course is designed for colleagues at the early stages of their development journey and explores the role of leadership in delivering change.  Delegates benefit from growing their network of likeminded colleagues from different housing providers in a supportive environment.

Aileen’s recognition that housing colleagues must feel equipped and supported still resonated strongly today. By investing early, SEC help retain talented professionals who might otherwise step away from housing due to a lack of clear career progression pathways.

Why does CIH membership matters for participants?

SEC offer all delegates CIH membership for the duration of their course. The main driver for this is to make sure they have access to the CIH mentoring programme, which connects aspiring leaders with inspirational senior peers in other organisations.

CIH memberships is also a vital part for learning as it gives access to the latest good practice and policy insights that lead the sector. By embedding CIH membership into the programme, it ensures that the future leaders can grow personally whilst also staying connected to the values and professional community that will sustain them throughout their careers.
