This online training course provides an opportunity for individuals who work across social housing to better understand the Mental Capacity Act 2005 so we can provide a more thoughtful approach to service delivery for social housing customers and communities.

What will I learn?

The session will include group activities and will consider best practices, options available when assessing capacity and what is needed to ensure an appropriate, safe and fair service for all.

During this online training course you'll:

  • Gain an overview of the critical elements of the Mental Capacity Act, 2005 and how to apply them
  • Understand how capacity is assessed and identify when it is necessary to involve health/social care practitioners and other professionals
  • Consider how, as housing officers/support workers, we can assist individuals in understanding their rights and responsibilities as a tenant
  • Explore the options available for a variety of individuals when granting and terminating tenancies, including when financial matters are involved
  • Gain an understanding of the role of the Court of Protection, Independent Mental Capacity advocates, relatives, LPAs and court-appointed deputies
  • Consider best practice solutions in cases of anti-social behaviour and rent arrears and make difficult decisions
  • Explore how we use a variety of communication methods
  • Consider how individuals who have difficulty making decisions can be vulnerable to abuse and ‘cuckooing.’
  • Recognise the importance of recording our opinions. observations and practical methods used.

Who should attend?

This course is beneficial for housing managers, team leaders in housing, and frontline housing staff.

It's essential if you work in these areas to understand how to assess capacity under the Mental Capacity Act.  The knowledge and skills you gain will help you apply the MCA requirements to your role.

Pauline Haynes started her career in the social housing sector and has been a training consultant and coach for24 years, developing and delivering training programmes in the social housing sector, NHS, local government, children and young people’s services, HMP, the probation service.
