Join us at Derwenthorpe, the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust development in York
This guided tour will look at the creation of a new garden village designed to encourage sustainable communities.
Over 100 years ago, Joseph Rowntree built York’s garden village of New Earswick as a model community. A century later, Derwenthorpe was created to emulate this model, providing much needed new housing in the city. The development explores three themes focusing around creating sustainable communities:
- Environmental performance – practical solutions to deliver low carbon homes:
- Environmental behaviours – encouraging and supporting more sustainable lifestyles: and
- Community development – addressing barriers to digital inclusion and creating shared spaces with the community for the community.

The tour will be led by Matt Lewer, JRHT service transformation lead and vice lead CIH Yorkshire and Humber.
