In this webinar we will discuss the role of small homes and micro-apartments in tackling the housing crisis in English cities, considering their proliferation in relation to questions of adequacy, affordability and amenity.
This webinar will discuss new research lead by King’s College London which explores where, and why, small homes are proliferating in London and beyond.
It will address the data deficit which prevents planners, developers and home-buyers from understanding trends in housing size. Also, it will draw on the 24 million+ Energy Performance Certificates issued since 2010 to map the location of homes below the recommended 2015 Nationally Described Space Standard for a one-person one-bed property.
It will show that small flats and studios designed for one person are more expensive on a metre-for-metre basis than larger flats, and though they tend to be built in urban areas where land is expensive and demand is high, they are not catering for those in most housing need.
It will suggest that small homes can be a sustainable solution to the housing crisis but that regulation needs to enforce certain minimal standards, and ensure that these are built in the right places.
