Sustaining tenancies is a core goal for all social landlords, from AHBs to local authorities. This three-hour interactive workshop explores what effective tenancy sustainment looks like in Ireland and how housing and support staff can help tenants stay housed and thrive.

The session covers common causes of tenancy risk, including rent arrears, anti-social behaviour, support needs and poor communication, and provides practical strategies for early intervention, partnership working and person-centred practice.

We explore the connections between tenancy sustainment, trauma-informed practice, housing rights and regulatory compliance, including the Affordable Housing Bodies Regulatory Authority’s (AHBRA) Tenancy Management Standard. Through real-life scenarios and reflective exercises, participants will build confidence in identifying the factors that place tenancies at risk and develop practical, person-centred solutions that support both tenants and housing providers.

What will I learn?

From this training, you'll learn to:

  • Define tenancy sustainment and understand why it matters for tenants, landlords and communities
  • Recognise early warning signs of tenancy breakdown
  • Explore the causes of tenancy risk, including financial hardship, isolation and support needs
  • Apply practical tools for engaging tenants, including strength-based and trauma-informed approaches
  • Build confidence in managing difficult conversations and supporting positive behaviour change
  • Understand the role of multi-agency working in sustainment
  • Link sustainment approaches to AHBRA’s Tenancy Management Standard and organisational social impact outcomes

Who should attend?

This course is ideal for housing staff working in tenancy management, allocations, income recovery, housing support or maintenance across AHBs, local authorities, or housing-led support services. It is especially relevant for those in frontline or tenant-facing roles seeking to prevent tenancy loss and strengthen tenancy support approaches.

Benefits of attending

Participants will leave with a toolkit of practical approaches to improve tenancy sustainment, reduce evictions and support more secure housing outcomes. The training builds confidence and skills in early intervention, trauma-informed practice and person-centred communication.

It supports compliance with the AHBRA Tenancy Management Standard and helps embed a preventative, supportive approach that reflects the values and responsibilities of the housing sector.
