CIH responds to latest homelessness statistics in England (April–June 2025)

The latest statutory homelessness statistics for April–June 2025 in England have been published, once again showing record levels of households in temporary accommodation (TA).

In total, 132,410 households, including 172,420 children, were living in TA and waiting for a stable, affordable place to call home.

This represents a 7.6 per cent increase on the same period in the year before and a 1.2 per cent increase on the previous quarter.

Some indicators show changes in the homelessness system, with the number of families in unsuitable B&B accommodation falling by 22.4 per cent from the same period last year.

Meanwhile, households in self-contained nightly accommodation now account for the highest proportion of all households in TA.

‘Underlines urgency’

Commenting on the figures, Chloe Fletcher, head of policy and external affairs at CIH, said: “Today’s release of record numbers of households in temporary accommodation underlines the urgency for a homelessness strategy with fixed targets, cross ministerial buy-in and long-term funding to build a future where everyone has a safe and secure place to call home.

“We recently welcomed the recent announcement of £84 million in additional funding for homelessness, including £11 million to facilitate targeted support for families to ease some of the difficulties that accompany stays in TA.

“However, these hundreds of thousands of people do not represent true levels of hidden homelessness and we can expect them to rise further still without strategic intervention.”

She added: “In our submission to the forthcoming budget, we have urged the government to address this crisis by investing in changes that prevent homelessness, reduce hardship, and provide support to those who need it.

“We have also urged the government to lift the freeze on local housing allowance to prevent homelessness for private renters and ease pressures on councils providing TA.”
