CIH welcomes additional investment in armed forces housing

The Ministry of Defence have pledged £1.5 billion of additional funding to improve accommodation for the UK Armed Forces. The investment will be confirmed as part of the launch of the Government’s upcoming Strategic Defence Review (SDR), helping renew the nation’s contract with those who serve, supporting the government’s Plan for Change.

As the professional body for housing, CIH recognises the importance of providing safe, secure, and affordable homes for all, including those who serve our country. Improving armed forces housing not only enhances the wellbeing of service members but also contributes to broader goals of housing quality and community stability.

We encourage the government to ensure that this investment is part of a comprehensive, long-term strategy that includes:

  • Sustainable funding mechanisms to maintain and improve homes over time
  • Collaboration with housing professionals and organisations to apply best practices in housing development and management
  • Integration with wider housing policies to address the needs of service families within the broader context of national housing challenges.

Responding to the news CIH chief executive Gavin Smart commented:

“We welcome the government's announcement of an additional £1.5 billion investment in armed forces housing as part of the Strategic Defence Review. This commitment to improving the quality and availability of accommodation for service personnel and their families is a positive step toward addressing long-standing issues in military housing. It is vital that this investment ensures housing meets the highest standards and truly serves those who have dedicated themselves to public service.”
