The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government had responded to recommendation put forward in the Housing, Community and Local Government Committee (HCLGC) report on housing conditions in temporary accommodation. CIH is pleased to see new government commitments on issues it raised in its submission.
In most cases, it outlines where the government is already making investment and headway or has commitments to address in the National Plan to End Homelessness. However, we welcome several new commitments made, including:
- The government are investigating how to improve the information collected on the quality of temporary accommodation; they will write to the committee in autumn with an update of these efforts
- The government has acknowledged recent reports of the use of managed hostel accommodation for families past the six-week legal limit by councils, and commits to review whether further action is necessary to regulate or reduce this practice
- The government will engage with the sector on the practice of placing children in accommodation with single, male adults and consider whether guidance needs updating on this issue
- The government will consider whether it is suitable to extend the six-week legal limit for temporary accommodation that cannot meet the Decent Homes Standard from when it comes into force in 2035.
