Today the Chancellor will deliver her Spending Review, which will include a major boost to social and affordable housing investment with £39 billion for a new Affordable Homes Programme over 10 years.
Gavin Smart, CIH chief executive welcomed the news, providing this response:
“We welcome the Chancellor’s announcement of £39 billion for a new 10-year Affordable Homes Programme – the biggest investment in social and affordable housing in a generation.
"This represents a near doubling of the previous programme and sends a strong signal about the government’s commitment to tackling the housing crisis. Long-term funding of this scale has the potential to transform delivery – enabling the building of more homes for social rent, Affordable Rent, and shared ownership.
"The accompanying 10-year rent settlement, with rents set at CPI+1% from 2026, alongside a promised consultation on social rent convergence, should also significantly strengthen the financial capacity of social landlords and support new development.
"We look forward to seeing the full details of the announcement later today and will be keeping our members up to date on what it means for them and the communities they serve.”
We will share full analysis once the details of the Spending Review are confirmed. CIH members can expect to see a What You Need To Know guide published this week.
