Buying homes, managing them as a landlord and building new homes requires money. Owner-occupiers and landlords largely meet these costs themselves but operate within economic policies and taxation rules set by governments. Local authorities – and even more so housing associations – also have a degree of independence in how they raise and spend money, but they are beneficiaries of government support through grants towards new housebuilding. Tenants – whether in the private or social sectors – may receive help to pay their rents from the social security system if they are on low incomes.
Governments also influence or determine many aspects of the wider economy that affect the housing market and housing providers.
This section of the Knowledge Hub looks first at government involvement in different aspects of housing finance, then at the financing of the private market and finally – in a little more detail – at the social housing sector.
